Penrose Tile Side Table

Made this Maple and epoxy Penrose tile pattern table in 2019. Worked really hard on the base, only to realize afterwards that it was not good (neither sturdy nor good looking). I give myself some credit, though, because it was my first time designing a base from scratch. But,…

I realized I could put an LED light on the little triangular shelf, and the pattern would glow. The way I achieved the effect was to cut the pattern into the top to within a few mm of the bottom, fill the pattern with epoxy, then I used a handheld electric planer and a belt sander to remove the bottom layer of wood until the epoxy pattern showed through.

This is one of those builds that I would like to revisit with some of the better knowledge that I have now. I'd certainly make the base different.
